FIRE-RATED GLASS · PROJECT SPECIFICATION

What Do E, EW and EI Mean in Fire-Rated Glass?

For fire-rated glazing, a phrase such as “60-minute fire glass” is not enough. Required classification, duration, test standard and the frame/system configuration need to be considered together.

What does class E mean?

E primarily addresses integrity: the ability of the glazing assembly to resist the passage of flames and hot gases for the specified period.

How is EW different?

EW combines integrity with an additional limit on radiant heat transmission.

Why is EI more demanding?

EI evaluates both integrity and insulation. The tested system configuration therefore matters as much as the nominal glass product.

Why must glass and frame be considered together?

Fire-rated performance is often certified for a complete assembly including glass, frame, seals, fixings and installation details. Mixing untested components may not retain the stated classification.

What should an RFQ include?

Specify E/EW/EI class, duration in minutes, panel dimensions, door/partition/façade system, frame information, applicable standard, required test documentation and quantity.
