Float, Laminated, Low-E and Solar-Control Glass: What Is Each Used For?
Knowing the product label is not enough in glass procurement. A single project may combine base glass, safety, thermal performance and solar control in different layers.
When is float glass the starting point?
Float glass is the base material for many downstream products. Thickness, dimensions, tint and optical quality form the first layer of a procurement brief.
What makes laminated glass different?
Laminated construction bonds two or more glass layers with an interlayer. It is commonly selected for safety, fragment retention, acoustics and specification-driven requirements.
What does Low-E glass solve?
Low-E coatings are used to manage heat transfer. Coating surface, temperability, IGU build-up and project performance values should be evaluated together.
When is solar-control glass relevant?
Solar-control performance matters where façades and windows must manage solar heat gain. Selection should not be based on colour or appearance alone.
How should the buying decision be structured?
Define the end use and performance target first, then convert make-up, processing, dimensions, quantity and delivery basis into an RFQ.
